Tell us a little of your transit system’s background and history. How did the system start and where is it today?
Valley County Health System (VCHS) Public Transit began in 1994 with the purchase of a 1992 blue Ford van. Funding for the purchase of this van was made possible by grants received from the state of Nebraska and matching funds from the Ord Senior Center, the City of Ord, and the Valley County Health System Foundation.
Currently, the Valley County Transit System consists of three vans, two full time drivers, and two PRN drivers, and administrative staff.
How long have you served as the manager?
I have been with VCHS for 25 years and took over the transportation department along with my other duties in approximately 1999.
How does your transit system serve the local community?
We are demand service and will transport anyone in Nebraska if they schedule at least 24 hours in advance, however we primarily serve Ord and the surrounding communities. We also provide transportation to a few disabled students that need rides to and from school. We also help deliver meals for the Ord Senior Center.
What are some highlights of serving your community?
Our transportation service has helped individuals get to work when their car is broke down, get patients to and from their healthcare appointments, and take residents grocery shopping or to get their hair done.
What are some challenges you see facing both your transit system and the industry as a whole?
The everyday wear and tear on the vehicles especially in the snow and eventual mud! We have had a new replacement van on order for at least three years.
What do your riders think of your transit system?
They appreciate our service to the community and area.
